First, stop the water

Behind the machine there are one or two taps feeding the inlet hoses. Turn them off. A slow leak from a seal will stop being a problem, and a burst inlet hose will stop being a flood.

Then mop up, put down dry paper towel or newspaper around the base, and run a short cycle while you watch. The paper shows you where water first appears, which is the single most useful piece of information and the thing people usually cannot answer when they call.

Do not pull the machine out and start removing panels. Leave it as it is once you know where the water comes from.

Leaks at the front

The door seal

On a front loader the rubber boot around the door takes constant abuse. Underwire from a bra, a zip, a coin or a nail can nick it, and the fold at the bottom holds water and grit that wears it over time.

Pull the seal back and inspect the whole circumference, especially the lower third. You are looking for splits, perished rubber, or a hard deposit stopping the door closing squarely. The detergent drawer

Water running down the front of the machine from the drawer is usually not a fault at all. Either the drawer housing is blocked with set softener so incoming water backs up, or there is simply too much detergent producing foam that overflows.

Pull the drawer out, soak it, brush the jets in the housing above it, and cut the dose. High-efficiency machines use a fraction of the water older machines did and need far less soap than most people use.

Leaks at the back

Inlet hose connections are the most common and the most dangerous, because they are under mains pressure all the time. Check both ends of both hoses, make sure the rubber washers are seated, and hand-tighten firmly.

Rubber inlet hoses perish. If yours are original on a machine over about eight years old, replacing them with braided steel hoses is cheap insurance against a burst while nobody is home.

Leaks during drain and spin

The drain circuit only holds water under pressure while the pump is running, so a leak that appears exactly then is a strong clue.

The most common cause is the drain pump filter not screwed back in tightly, or its seal being dirty, after someone cleaned it. Check that first because it takes seconds.

Beyond that, the pump housing itself can crack, and the flexible hose between the tub and the pump can split at a bend. Both need the machine opening up.

Leaks during spin only, from the middle

This is the one nobody wants. The outer tub has a seal where the drum shaft passes through it, and behind that seal are the drum bearings. When the seal fails, water gets to the bearings, and the bearings then fail loudly.

The sequence is usually: a rumbling or grinding noise that gets worse over a few months, then water appearing under the middle of the machine during the spin.

Replacing a tub seal and bearings is a big job. On many machines the outer tub is sealed and has to be replaced as a unit, and at that point the parts and labour can approach the price of a new washer. What is not a leak

Condensation on the outside of the machine in a humid basement. Water tracking along the floor from a nearby sink or floor drain. A wet patch that turns out to be the standpipe backing up when the machine discharges, which is a household drain problem rather than an appliance one.

Put dry paper down and confirm the water is actually coming from the machine before assuming.
